Smiling Tree, a family-owned company in Minnesota, makes charming wooden toys by hand and plants a tree for each one sold. The surprisingly affordable toys make quality, sustainable playthings accessible to everyone. (Custom name puzzle toys start at $29 for a three-letter name, plus $3 per letter or symbol.) Smiling Tree also makes blocks, trucks, stacking toys, and more. They use American-grown maple, cherry, or walnut woods for most of their toys, with a finish of organic jojoba oil and local beeswax. The company never uses paints, stains, or dyes, and this gives their toys a classic look that we prefer to the garish plastic we see on a lot of children’s things these days.
