Ragged Coast Chocolates
It's not really possible for a Maine chocolatier to have a fully local operation — last time we checked, cacao doesn’t grow that far North — but Kate and Steve Shaffer, the couple that owns Ragged Coast Chocolates, source as many ingredients as possible from farmers in their area. The operation, originally a passion project, “twinkled into existence” 15 years ago and has been growing ever since. In the early days, before they had a storefront, Kate and Steve sold their chocolates at farmers markets, where they established relationships with local producers. They retain strong ties with other food artisans and often trade chocolate for produce, edible flowers, and more. We think it’s a wonderful way to sustain and strengthen a local food economy!
