Mill Food Recycler

The Mill Food Recycler, a sleek, in-kitchen bin, dries and grinds food scraps overnight, turning them into nutrient-rich grounds. These grounds can be used in your own garden, go into your city’s green bin, or shipped back to Mill to be turned into food for chickens. The device holds up to 40 pounds of food scraps, including items many compost systems can’t handle, such as small bones and fruit pits. It can take up to four weeks to fill, runs quietly, and the filter only needs replacing once a year. The company reports that users cut kitchen waste volume by up to 80% and prevent up to 735 kilograms of carbon emissions per year. An app helps users track how much waste they’ve diverted. The sleek, North American–made bins work well in shared spaces like office kitchens and restaurants as well as homes.

In a May 2025 article on composting in Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., Bluedot Living reporter Lucas Thors wrote about Catboat, a Vineyard coffee shop that uses two Mill bins to reduce food waste. Thors writes: “According to [Catboat’s owner], the Mill bins emit no odor, consume very little energy, and are virtually silent as they process food waste. By the time the bins are ready to be emptied, they’ve reduced the food waste volume by about 80%, so Catboat only needs to empty the bins about once a week in the offseason and once every two days during peak summer.” Impressive!

At $999, the Mill Food Recycler’s upfront cost is undeniably high. But we think that the Mill is undeniably cool and, per our sources, efficient and effective.  A $75 discount with code BLUEDOT and a 90-day trial period make it a little easier to take the plunge. On the whole, we think that anyone looking for a low-effort way to tackle food waste will really enjoy this item. Mill also supports important community composting organizations and food waste reduction efforts in New York, Arizona, and beyond.
