Bluedot’s Marketplace Editor, Elizabeth, lives in midtown Manhattan, not far from the United Nations. On her daily walks, she passes hundreds of uniquely stylish people. Unfortunately, when she asks folks what they’re wearing, she often hears that their fabulous clothes can’t be found in the U.S. So, when Elizabeth ran after a woman wearing fabulous, bright billowing checked trousers and a matching top, she was delighted to learn that it had been designed only miles away.

The designer was Indian-born, New-York-based Rujuta Sheth. Sheth specializes in sustainable, colorful clothing that’s destined to capture attention. This isn’t apparel for the meek: Almost everything comes in bold, multi-hued geometric patterns and prints. Signature items include the wide-legged, hand-loomed cotton Frida Pants. Three buttons on the waist make it easy to adjust where the pants sit. It also gives the wearer flexibility both in styling and sizing. Other staples include the boxy, boat-necked Mira Top; the understated Venus Wrap Jumpsuit, available in several solid colors; and the high-waisted Leila Maxi Skirt. While there is a small selection of outerwear, this is clothing for temperate weather.

In addition to making eye-catching clothes, Rujuta Sheth prioritizes sustainable, ethical production and materials. The items are made from cotton and linen, most hand-loomed in India at Fair Trade certified factories. Sheth strives for a zero-waste operation, and uses scraps to create additional garments, accessories, and home goods. And, everything ships in eco-friendly packaging. Sizes range from XS to 4X.
